A ‘grey’ patina is good; pitting from corrosion not so much. A mirror finish polish may be attractive, but if it comes at the expense of gold plating, etchings or gold wash on the blade, the brand stampings on the tang, or the faint belt sander marks on the blade from the factory hollow grind, the previous owner may have devalued the piece significantly in trying to “make it more presentable.” An authentic antique will have the original scales and pins.

The Kissing Crane story began when a German scissors maker from Soligen named Peter Daniels Pauls married Johanne Amalie Storsbeg, whose father owned a penknife making business.
In 1834, shortly after the marriage Pauls began to produce penknives on his own.
